ICARE master class with Prof Pearsall and Prof Beattie

Semester 3: Specialisation

Third semester is dedicated to elective courses. The students select three to four out of nine proposed classes, under the guidance of their supervisors. This semester is characterised by a large amount of practical work by the students to be carried out both individually and in groups. Seminars with the participation of industrial experts are also envisaged, in order to provide the students with first-hand experience on the work methodology in a private company.

The professors will make sure that (up to) four courses are chosen maximising existing synergies between the topics, taking into account the students’ preferences, and career opportunities. Normally, the students will select their courses out of the two proposed reference curricula:

  • Curriculum on electricity production, which is composed of:
    • solar electricity, wind, biomass and geothermal energy technologies;
    • energy conservation and grid connection control;
    • electrical energy efficiency;
    • hydrogen production and energy storage;
    • energy economics & system life cycle analysis
  • Curriculum on thermal energy production, which includes courses on:
    • solar thermal, biomass and geothermal technologies;
    • thermal energy efficiency;
    • building energy efficiency;
    • hydrogen production and energy storage;
    • energy economics & system life cycle analysis

Semester 4: Internships

Fourth semester is spent by the students on an internship, either in companies, or research organisations or universities, in order to gain practical experience in their future work environment, and to apply practically the knowledge that they acquired during the previous courses. Some selected Chinese students will be given the possibility to carry out their internship in Europe.

  1. The internship is not less than six months for European master diploma conferred by PT. The laboratory research work is not less than one year for Chinese master diploma conferred by HUST. The six-month internship for the master diploma conferred by PT is included in the one-year laboratory research work for the master diploma conferred by HUST.
  2. Three possible organizations of internship are considered as follows:6-month internship offered by industrial partners of ICARE (in China);
  • 6-month internship offered by industrial partners of ICARE (in China);
  • 6-month internship offered in Europe by European partners’ universities and associates;
  • 6-month research work in Chinese research laboratory;

These 6-month internships are required to be completed with extra 6-month research work in Chinese research laboratory as required by HUST master diploma.

  1. The selection for each student's European internship is discussed case by case by an adhoc selection committee on the basis of criteria commonly agreed.
  2. European master thesis is to be handed in after the internship. The regulations are given in the ICARE European Master Thesis Guidelines.
